Perspectives is setting a new benchmark in support services by being the first facility in the United States to offer the innovative “Surviving and Thriving in the Real World” (STRW) program. Developed by Dr. Amie Duncan, PhD.
Skills for Life is the first community provider in the country to offer Surviving and Thriving in the Real World (STRW), which is the only evidence-based intervention that targets life skills in autistic adolescents! Over the course of the 15-week STRW intervention, both teens and their parent/caregiver identify life skills to work on and then collaborate to set realistic, doable goals for building essential life skills such as personal hygiene, cleaning, doing laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, and managing money. Studies have consistently found that teens gain 2-4 years of life skills after completing the STRW intervention and identifying the strategies that they can use as they continue to build skills into adulthood. Further, caregivers report decreased stress and increased emotional well-being after the intervention. Perspectives clearly understand the need to target the development of age-appropriate life skills so that autistic individuals in Northern Kentucky can meet their goals related to college, work, independent living, and community!
